Exhibition at Instituto Tomie Ohtake revisits the Videobrasil Historical Archive

SONGS FROM A FORGOTTEN PAST results from a collaborative partnership of four institutions and integrates the WE ARE HERE project – a series of videos and video installations by British artists curated by Tendai John Mutambu for the British Council and LUX around themes such as national identity, marginality, gender, environmental future and archiving.

As it makes its debut, SONGS FROM A FORGOTTEN PAST promotes a dialogue involving UK works, curated by Mutambu, and pieces by Brazilian artists conserved in the archives of Videobrasil Cultural Association, selected by Luise Malmaceda, from the Research and Curatorial Design Center at Instituto Tomie Ohtake.

According to the Brazilian curator, the works featured at the exhibition involve conventional narrative techniques, from playful to perverse, as they manipulate images or artfully steal through documentary practices to denounce social realities.
